Voices in the Class

We teachers have always faced challenges. New challenges have cropped up since language teaching encompasses instrumental and formative aspects. Though the acronym still exists as ELT, language teaching should actually focus on language learning. We must include all students, yet little do we know how to do this. We should teach for diversity though diversity does not seem to lie deep in curriculum designs. Following Browne’s Voices in the Park, an attempt will be made to voice different perspectives present in today’s EFL classrooms.

There is a need for teachers to open the door to new realms of possibility in the classroom. There is a need to deepen the understanding of what goes on during lessons as a way forward in professional development. This shared experience reveals what Reflective Practice has in store for educators – a tool which is data-based, collaborative, concrete and conversational rather than theoretical, individual, abstractand written (Walsh and Mann, 2015). It takes full attention, a thinking environment, a self-chosen focus and aiming to understand rather than to solve a problem.Teachers more than ever want to make sense of their experience by engaging in research which is small-scale, shared and significant. They need tools which inspire their work and their learners’ to enable them to meet other voices in the educational community.

Reflective Practice: Two Sides of the Same Experience

Content area: Methodology

Trainees shared their work in their practice lessons, how they implemented Project Work.

«During the first term of 2016, we planned, implemented and assessed project work in two state secondary schools. Our challenge was to engage our students in a rewarding and meaningful learning experience, where English became a means for communication, exploration and discovery. The aim of this presentation is to describe the process and share the results while we encourage reflection upon the feasibility and value of project work.»

Trainees: Almagro, Lucía; Chotro, Marisol; Cordeiro, Lucas; García, Cecilia; Guarido, María Paula; López, Evelyn; Ortellado, Cecilia; Pelater, Manuela;  Pepe, María Juliana; Perotti, Adela; Piñero, María Belén; Rizzardo, Nicole; Sartor, María Victoria; Simoncini, Julieta; Tórtora, María Isabela.

Discovering the Teacher in You

Content area: Methodology

Trainees from Residencia, Agustina Borré, Lucila Benavente and Andrea Brittes shared their experience so far.

Students’ way through the Methods course at the teacher’s training college is one which constitutes a ‘baptism of fire’. In this course, students are both exposed to a plan, practice and production process which allow them to combine theory and prior knowledge while developing their own creativity and identity as teachers. By the time trainees reach the internship, the fire, far from having extinguished, is ready to promote autonomous decision-making in a collaborative environment and sets trainees on a journey of self-discovery, with a view to making the classroom a more enjoyable, creative, meaningful place for both themselves and their students.

Developing and Evaluating Digital Materials

Content area: Materials design

Digital materials have been around for many decades with CD ROM’s accompanying course books as the most widespread alternative. Some teachers consider them as a motivating tool for students. However, they might fail to evaluate its real pedagogical quality. This presentation will explore criteria for analyzing CD ROM’s included in textbooks and the creation of e-activities to supplement their use in order to provide a more communicative learning opportunity for students.

Materials-Simplification or Social Circulation?

Content area: Methodology-Teaching materials
The aim of this presentation is to compare and contrast two experiences that we had as teacher trainees while delivering our practice lessons. On the one hand, we will explore the creation of a simplified text and its use in the classroom. On the other hand, we will focus on the exploitation of a text of social circulation (“We Know”, a poem by Benjamin Zephaniah), the lesson plan revolving around it and the final outcome.

The Storytelling Experience

Content area: Storytelling

This presentation displayed the various tools to tell stories in the EFL classroom. Agustina Borré and Silvina Tamburini shared the tips and strategies that helped them the most to include this form of art in their lessons. They talked about their own experience, fears and obstacles they overcame. They also told a story to show both the content and the pleasure of what they learnt.
